You didn't really read the charts, did you? As I noted a few minutes ago, the TRUCKS (F-series, Silverado, and Ram) are the overwhelming winners in sales YTD. It's not even a little bit close. Do the math, or read my previous post (I did the math) and you'll see how wide the gap really is between the TRUCKS and the Camry/Accord/Focus(x2).

I can't help but wonder - do willsaveNY and GasMizerAZ work for FoMoCo? Or are they just company shills?

Ford has done well in the market this year (I guess that means they've done less badly than most of the others) but they are not the only company selling vehicles. Looking at the numbers in the chart yields some (I think) interesting results -

The TRUCKS (Ford F-series, Chevy Silverado, and Dodge Ram) have combined YTD sales of 424,097 units. Those are the #1, #3, and #8 sellers, and the Silverado is less than 300 units behind the Camry for second place!)

If we take the #2 (Camry,) #4 (Accord,) and 2-times the #9 (Focus) that YTD total is 350639 which is still over 4100 units behind the TRUCKS!

Ford has sold over 85000 Fusions (not all hybrids, obviously) compared to a bit less than 56000 Prius from Toyota. The Fusion is the real thing, and it's a fine little car. They Fusion hybrid is a worthy adversary for the Prius - and it's a much nicer looking automobile... (My opinion - YMMV.)

Seems it's not for nothing that the F-series and the Silverado have been the top selling vehicles for many years now. Even with the gas prices we've endured for the past couple of years they're holding onto that top spot in the charts. Both Chevy (GM) and Dodge (Chrysler) have had their business severely impacted by the government virtually all year with forced dealer closings, plant shutdowns, discontinuation of (some popular) models, etc. With all of that, the Silverado is STILL only 300 units behind Camry for the #2 slot on the chart!

If you haven't looked at some of the other charts go back and follow the link to the Sales and Share of Total Market By Manufacturer chart.

YTD sales -
GM = 942132 units - 19.6% share
Toyota = 770149 units - 16.0% share
Ford = 743496 units - 15.5% share
Amer. Honda = 530778 units - 11.0% share
Chrysler = 471197 units - 9.8% share
Nissan = 347744 units - 7.2% share

Seems maybe GM wasn't the complete dud that many made it out to be. They did a lot of things wrong, but they still sold 170k more vehicles than Toyota from January through June. Ford is staying close to Toyota, and Chrysler is still ahead of Nissan. I just hope the government doesn't screw that up completely over the rest of the year.

An awful lot of number crunching went into this article. Too bad that it did not include MPG figures for each type of vehicle.

CUBBUC -- American's need to feel safe in the vehicles that they drive. By purchasing Smart cars and the likes, we're going to see an increase in the number of deaths on our roads, since SUV's and eighteen wheelers still rule the roads.

THe article would be much clearer if there were more graphs in it. It's not easy to understand all those tables and really know what's going on in the complete picture all at once. They could use more graphs. The ones that are there are helpful. Still need more.

The Ford Fusion Hybrid is truly great and outdoes the smaller Prius. The Nissan Altima Hybrid is much more enjoyable to drive than either Toyota Hybrid. It is a true shame that Honda did not take all its hybrid experience and come up with a much better new version of the Insight.

The new vehicle sales figures are depressing but no surprise in today's blah economy. Very surprising though that the new Focus with over 35 mpg, great reviews and road tests plus big rebates does not do better in sales!

I hope Ford keeps doing well. Unfortunately, we all need to make some concessions, starting with the CEO's of companies. They need to set an example for their employees.

roadrunnerMO, are you insane? You say that we need illegal aliens up here to fill jobs that don't exist! Americans are doing everything they can to earn a buck to pay the bills, and keep their heads above water, because of no jobs, and you say we need illegals filling the jobs. Do you own a meat packing plant that pays less than minimum wage to your illegals? You sir, need to find a new country to live in.

hybridahlic you definitely would regret that choice. Consumers Report has just evaluated the Insight and gave it the lowest rating ever for a car. Prius wins their top rating for a hybrid - and why not? After all the Prius is on their third generation and improving all the time. My wife drives one and it is awesome. When she is not looking I drive it!

What was hot of the lots last month is not likely to be the same this month/quarter as we have slipped back into recession mode. What shocks me is the number of folks I know who are really enjoying their unemployment benefits and do not want a job unless it is a top notch one. So the economy needs those from south of the border who are willing to work unless they are drawing unemployment as well. So much for the work ethic of my generation who are now of retirement age.

What is surprising is that large and luxury cars are down the least and small SUVs actually gained. People will usually buy what they want to buy, unless gas gets just too prohibitively expensive.

And, GM continues to build what people are buying. Why drop cars people want to build 35 mpg econoboxes that no one is buying?

Yea well the numbers are going to get even more "interesting and surprising" as the US middle class completely stops buying any cars. What happened to the Titanic after it hit the iceberg is happening to America. The stern is not suppose to be rising out of the water!

Interesting info. Ford is gaining market share, Chrysler is losing market share. About 55% of Toyota's are domestically made, and about 75% of Honda's are domestically made, I did not know that before.
