GM sues Ohio company for rare 'Vette replicas

Detroit News -- he 1963 Corvette Grand Sport roadster is the rarest and arguably most important Corvette model ever made. Only five were built, and they sell for millions at auction.
But an Ohio company is being sued by General Motors for churning out replica versions that sell for less than $90,000.
The lawsuit was filed this month in U.S. District Court against Mongoose Motorsports LLC of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, which specializes in building replica 1984-88 GTP models and the legendary Grand Sport.

GM is suing for trademark infringement, claiming the iconic brand has been irreparably harmed by the ersatz sports cars, which the automaker says copy the Corvette's design -- curve for curve.
GM wants a judge to bar the company from making and selling models using the Corvette design.

There have been knockoff of the Cobra, almost since it was made and they haven't hurt the value of the real ones.

How is some company building replicas, going to affect the price of the original five that were built? This is absurd.

Just another reason I'll never buy another GM.
A little bit sue happy. I'll just assume the replicas are better quality than the originals.

Ummm...there are Lamborghini Replicas so why not Corvette Replicas? Personally I wouldn't buy a Replica & I do agree it devalues the original...However if you're aloud to replicate one thing, why not all things provided it is known to the people buying them?

I could see this being a problem in the future when people are looking for the originals & mistakenly buy a replica for the price of the original!

One would think that any company that would go to the expense to "tool and die" the production necessary for such a venture would BEGIN by seeking the NECESSARY approvals from GM and any other pertinent entities.

Sounds like an arcane copyright case.

But why build only five of a car - you lose the advantages of mass production and economy of scale - unless your intent is to build a status symbol and not a practical vehicle.

And I'm still confused why ANYONE would want a Corvette! A very silly car.

I highly doubt anyone is buying one of these thinking it's original. With 5 ever built it would not be that difficult to track down the owners of these 5 if they all still exist. Have they violated trademarks? Maybe. But with GM now being owned by the government, doesn't all of their intellectual property instantly become public domain?

hank1326: "Time to vote them out of the office before it is too late for us!"

WHY? So the next fancy-talking LIAR can learn how to play the DC games?? This country is broken beyond a miracle repair! READ what the Declaration Of Independence says about a "corrupt government". Or as I said as a mechanic of most people who fixed their own car: "It's ''Fixed'' so it can't ever be fixed properly."

Do they want my 1959 Corvette which has been sitting in my garage for 30 years. Oh it has both tops soft and hard fuel injected 283-290hp and four speed trans and posi rear end. And I paid $2100 for it in 1963.

Carrol Shelby has had this problem for years. Most of the knock off Cobra that were manufactured, were done without his blessing. I remember one or two companies moved to the Ukraine for "manufacturing quality control" but it was reported they moved so Shelby could not sue in a U.S. Court. I think as of last month Shelby lost the court ruled his car shapes were not protected.

hmmm suing is never a good thing. But with the value of replicas, I believe the owners of those cars are not happy because of the knock offs.

"And if they win, nothing goes back to the taxpayer"

Of course not!! Even if the feds demanded it, it SHOULD be put toward the Obama's Government Healthcare bill that was passed tonight! We're taking a 99,000th Mortgage on the United States and our local congress people turned their backs on us again! Why isn't the important stuff like this ever placed on a BALLOT, and let *US* decide??

This country is looking more & more like the old Nazi Germany every hour!

True, this is the NEW GM that is suing. The bankruptcy ended all claims AGAINST the old GM, now Liquidation Motors". Liquidation Motors may still hold lawsuits against others that would be included in their assets.

If they sue and win, then the money should go into the bankruptcy for their creditors. But would that happen, most likely not.

Replica cars are just that. Any collector recognizes them for what they are and prices them accordingly. Just another chance for under worked attorneys to make a few bucks for themselves and Government Motors.

So all the other replicars and kit cars are illegal too? How about all the models from the 70's, 80's, 90's and today looking like other makes?
