edward: maybe in Chicago-land, but not here. Nothing "same" here, that's for sure.

Maybe the average is the same, but it sure seems like they are more volatile... Higher swings in pricing for little if any reason.

Stable? Are you joking?
Prices here were below $3 at several stations at the Christmas season. Then they jumped 12 cents. Then another increase and another jump to today's $3.27 at many stations and $3.29 at many others. A few have done their usual drop by a penny every two or three days.
The Atlanta average is $3.318 now after $3.240 one week ago and $3.227 one month ago, misleading numbers / comparisons.
I am not sure why anyone with one ounce of sense would buy gas from a station that is selling it at $3.29 (or higher) when other nearby stations have lowered prices to $3.24.

I wonder what would happen if the government broke up the monopoly in the petroleum industry, like they did the telephone industry (ATT) quite a few years ago... THEN there could be some competition and prices could drop like a rock!!
