Chrysler reveals redesigned 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Chrysler Group revealed photographs and the name of its replacement for the Jeep Liberty on Friday after photographs of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee showed up on auto enthusiast websites earlier in the day.

The automaker had hoped to keep the mid-size SUV -- and its name -- secret until a planned reveal at the New York auto show in late March. However, photos of several 2014 Cherokees taken during pre-production at Chrysler's Toledo North Assembly plant were unveiled Friday morning on the site Jalopnik.com.

The automaker released few details Friday in revealing the name, but included four official photos of the new vehicle and said it will begin arriving in dealerships in the third quarter.

I understand that Ford and Chrysler has felt the need to make their former SUVs look more carlike in order to keep marketing them (very much unlike the early 2000s, when GM felt the need to make their minivans look more SUV-like to sell them), but this is taking it a bit too far. Especially for the Cherokee nameplate – a classic nameplate that can be said to have STARTED the SUV era in the first place.

This should be something to see. I wonder how long you have to drive and at what speed you find high gear. Put three more in it and call it a Mack.

They were decent vehicles for their time, rugged and fun to drive on and off road, but the gas mileage sucked and it became difficult to justify having one as a primary car. The new one looks good and if Jeep has been able to replicate the traditional toughness and performance of the older models and also achieve mileage ratings that are competitive for the mid-size SUV class, they should have a winner here.
