Driverless Vehicles Expected to Navigate Intersection of Safety, Speed

ScienceDaily.com -- How do driverless vehicles navigate through intersections? Faster and safer than if humans were in charge, according to researchers from the Virginia Tech Transportation Research.

Autonomous vehicles will turn themselves over to an automated intersection controller, which will allow the vehicles to move at the speed limit, with the controller tweaking their trajectory to prevent crashes, explained Ismail Zohdy of Cairo, Egypt, a Ph.D. student in civil engineering at Virginia Tech, and Hesham Rakha, director of the Center for Sustainable Mobility at the transportation institute and professor of civil engineering at the university.

Wouldn't need red light cameras if these are "in control"...

I would rather maintain control for many of the reasons some others have listed. Besides before you know it, we're fighting Terminators. ;^)

Unless you can guarantee that a driverless vehicle's computer won't lock up like a personal computer, I'd rather not have them on the road. Even worse, what if the automated intersection controller malfunctions? What a mess that could be!

I would still be very fearful if I was a pedestrian trying to cross the intersection.

Great! ... then you can sue the manufacture when you crash?

The way some of these morons use their texting and talking on the phone the driverless car would be safer. It is amazing how few people can not talk and drive at the same time to say nothing of texting.

WOW!

What a boon to blind people!

With voice-recognition installed, they can simply get in the car and tell it where to go.

This University study is all fine and such, but, from my 45 years of driving experience, it is my opinion that the Impatient American raised Drivers of this country wont stand for a computer doing the driving for them!! Americans are Impatient and demanding of their "Rights" do do as they please. Our youngest drivers are a Spoiled, Petulant Self Important bunch that think they have the "RIGHT" to do as they please, Youngsters that feel they have the right to go 82 MPH on Highways and Freeways limited to 55 and 65 MPH. If for no other reason, certainly not Love of Country, they will rebel for their God Given Right to go faster, cut off other Drivers and be First, in front of all others that, because its their RIGHT!!!!

I'm not sure how comfortable I would be letting a computer navigate my vehicle. I already have three different backup methods at work because I don't trust my desktop or laptop to always be reliable, nor do I completely trust the backup systems. How about we just teach people to drive? That being said, have you been to a Walmart lately? People just zoom out of the aisles with no consideration whatsoever that people might be walking down the main aisle. They probably drive like that.

Who is at fault when a chip fails and a wreck occurs. This is a nice Mr. Wizard project but not practical in the real world!
