Environmentalists urge TVA to shut down more coal plants

timesfreepress -- The Tennessee Valley Authority has shut down or announced plans to soon shutter more than a dozen of its oldest and smallest coal-fired generation units to meet federal clean air standards.

But environmental leaders appealed to TVA's new directors Thursday to move away more aggressively from the fossil fuels that have powered most of the Tennessee Valley for the past half century.

"The age of coal has passed," Louise Gorenflo, a member of the Tennessee Chapter of the Sierra Club, told TVA board members during their quarterly meeting in Chattanooga. "Now is the time for TVA to retreat from these fossil fuels that pump out more carbon into the atmosphere. We need to move to other renewable sources and do more to promote energy efficiency."

They also use 800 gallons of water per megawatt vs less than 400 for the newer gas turbines. AS to cost, the TVA cost estimates are about 1/2 of what the real costs are turning out to be in the real world. Ameren is finishing their first plant upgrade for a plant the size of one of the four TVA plants at $640 million. 4 times Ameren's real cost is $2.5 billion not $1 billion. CPS decided to close two plants less than 40 years old after real cost estimates came in at $970 million for the two plants that are each smaller than any one of TVA's 4 plants. For same money you can build nearly twice as much capacity in gas and use 35% less fuel and half as much water. And you have anew plant not one 50+ years old.

At least thats what I realize as my electric costs go up. New power plants have to be built to replace those that are shut down and at what cost to consumers. Seems all costs trickle down to consumer no matter what happens.
