as expensive as heating oils are right now, let's keep the NE warm at least... and find means to make the plants cleaner.

How I love your comments NH...."We are all tired of the constant political rants of a bunch of 'Angry Old Men' here that have nothing better to do than spout hateful and mean spirited diatribes on Recent News rather than comment on details of the news article at hand.
Will you 'Angry Old Men' please go to the Politics Forum to rant and rave at will? All here will be extremely grateful!
It is a simple matter of COST. Natural Gas is beating the heck out of Big Coal!"
Well said, particularly the part ABOUT 'Angry Old Men'!

Don't worry Ned. The brainwashed masses will just continue to blame Bush. After all, that's the official Obama motto they live by.

Are people so blind that they don't see the economic damage this is going to wreak on one that's already teetering on collapse, with negligible benefit to the environment?

Give me a break with the poor me liberal pity party. The brainwashed dems were relentless when it came to president Bush. Anyone who continues to support this corrupt and incompetent administration is about as UN-American as you can get. It might as well be the same as coming clean and stating the left wants to live under the curtails of big government, redistribution of wealth from those who have more,all by gladly giving up rights established by the constitution and to which our brave men and women who serve and who died defending our great country. All to give you libbies the right to condemn those who won't conform to the King's view.

The Tennessee Valley Authority was a bad idea from the beginning. Yes, shut those coal plants down.

54 years old and inefficient. They also use 800 gallons of water per megawatt vs less than 400 for the newer gas turbines. AS to cost, the TVA cost estimates are about 1/2 of what the real costs are turning out to be in the real world. Ameren is finishing their first plant upgrade for a plant the size of one of the four TVA plants at $640 million. 4 times Ameren's real cost is $2.5 billion not $1 billion. CPS decided to close two plants less than 40 years old after real cost estimates came in at $970 million for the two plants that are each smaller than any one of TVA's 4 plants. For same money you can build nearly twice as much capacity in gas and use 35% less fuel and half as much water. And you have anew plant not one 50+ years old.

Maybe the "Age of Coal" has passed but is still one of our cheaper resources for many things. At least thats what I realize as my electric costs go up. New power plants have to be built to replace those that are shut down and at what cost to consumers. Seems all costs trickle down to consumer no matter what happens.

Why waste resources closing them and forcing them to build new plants? Why not offer them incentives to clean up the plants and bring them up to the newest clean burning coal plants around? Then it is a win-win for everyone...

Unlike Dumbocrats, most conservatives are not in favor of wasting resources, no matter who was responsible for building them. We can see the abject stupidity of liberals like Obozo who succeeded in sending millions of perfectly good vehicles to rot in junkyards across the nation. It's always good to transition to more advanced and efficient technology, but it's quite obvious with Solyndra, Beacon Power, A123, Abound, etc. what happens when idiots try to force a transition by just dumping taxpayer money on the doorstep at some unproven businesses. Obozo has proven to be a failure at ALL of such ventures. How anyone could have voted for him a second time around after seeing such failure is beyond comprehension!"
=============================================================
Right on, jeskibuff! But it's futile to expect more from folks with less between their ears. BO's agenda is to destroy the middle class as he was taught by his Marxist mentors. "Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil." KJV

I thought the Pres. mission was to create jobs not destroy them. That's the main livelyhood for them. Coal burning is a lot cleaner than years ago with all the clean air restrictions that have been met.

Where do these environmentalists live? Do they live in Tennessee or in the Tennessee Valley Authorities energy grid? If they don't maybe the environmentalists should pay the difference in the cost of all the Gigawatts of electricity that it would cost to run electric generation plants with a different fuel.
