Well if they can't sell "taxes"..errrrrr..."investment" to the public by saying it's for clean energy, just add "for the children" and then everybody will believe it.
"Clean Energy for the Children" See? Who doesn't want that? Here's my money...oh it's involuntary? Ok, sure, take it. It's for the children.

Uhhhh...........where have these people been for the last 4 years??? Listening over and over again to Obama's 2008 campaign speeches while companies like Solyndra have been evaporating millions of taxpayer dollars with no real jobs to show for all of it?
The government has spent a lot of money on basic research but all the successful commercialization of things like space exploration, drug research and the Internet, to name just a few, has been done with private money, not government "investment."

Good for the government for investing for our future. Without this find of governmental investment, we would not have the Internet (came from the government DARPA Net), and all drug research would stop (it's governmental money that funds the basic research that eventually develops enough technology for drug discovery) which would kill off the pharmaceutical industry. It's important to have a balance of government and business to generate the technology and thus the jobs for this democracy

Would that not merely transfer jobs from one industry to another? So, if the federal government gives 65,000 canadian dollars to 20,000 people, will this have the same result? Isn't the question really, which group of 20,000 of your closest friends is given the taxpayers' money?

That makes for an expensive subsidy: 65k$ per job. Just taking away the subsidies from the oil industry might actually cause our dollar to drop, and we might have a good chance of getting those 500,000 manufacturing jobs back. The oil industry employs fewer than 200,000 people across Canada. They're are swimming in cash. They don't need any subsidy.

Typical propagandist's ploy: borrow words from a popular lexicon to describe your low-life operation. In this case, the word is "invest". Governments don't "invest" because they are putting nothing at risk since it's all other people's money. So they toss it around to the well-connected, and if something happens to work out and make something good happen, so much the better and they can pat themselves on the back as if they were actual "investors".

catfish99 & SammyAdams are right on the money. Scroll down. "Green jobs" = steal money from taxpayers and give it to your buddies who can't make it on their own. (But who will organize throngs of people to vote for you)

How would that gain in jobs be offset by job losses in the oil and gas industry done in protest over losing their handout.

Will believe when I see it. However, who will fill the 20,000 jobs considering the oil industry is struggling now plus their are not even skilled trades people already.

From the article: "If the federal government invested the $1.3 billion it gives the oil and gas industry annually in subsidies"
=============================================================
I am not aware of any subsidies that the Canadian government gives to oil companies. If this is equivalent to the allegations that that the U.S. government gives oil companies subsidies, then there are no subsidies given. The oil and gas industries have certain TAX DEDUCTIONS as do all other mining operations which covers LOSSES that they experience, but these are not subsidies.
Rather than subsidize any business, why not return the $1.3 Billion to the taxpayers from where it came. They have a better track record of making a profit than the subsidized "greenies" do.

The Question that comes to mind here is: why is the government handing over our tax dollars to the most profiting industry in Canada that continually rips the common people off? The only logical reason is for the kickbacks to the politicians.

mswillia, you are wrong, if they left that money with the original owner, ie the taxpayer they took it from, it would go further.
This is more of the Federal Government picking and choosing winners and losers. in this case LOSERS

If the federal government invested the $1.3 billion it gives the oil and gas industry annually in subsidies into clean energy, the cash injection would create nearly 20,000 new jobs across Canada, according to a report by an organization of unions and environmental groups.
Is this fact or fiction..

All true green energy jobs are short term because once installed it does not require constant maintenance or replacement.

Similar stats were used to justify US spending on "green jobs". Most of the jobs are gone because the companies cannot stay in business. Why? 1. Government always backs the losers. If the idea made economic sense, venture capital would be behind it already. 2. Political types tend to give money to their backers. 3. Because of vast energy discovery in the last decade, "green" answers are horribly expensive.
Funding research at the university level and requiring it to be freely shared = good investment. Picking winners and losers = bad investment.
But not many paybacks come from colleges, so don't hold your breath.

Well, this is a Canadian organization issuing the report...But it's still baloney. Note that the scale of jobs is about the same as those that would be created by the Keystone XL pipeline. Yet this Green gang would shriek in horror before admitting those jobs are worth anything.
