Fuel taxes more effective than CAFE standards for cutting consumption! The higher the fuel taxes and the higher the cost of fuel, the more people will consider higher mpg vehicles. It's a matter of how much money do you want to spend to get to where you want to go. Of course, there's always the pickup that is designed to carry large or heavy loads, carry a persons materials as his job truck OR pull a trailer of various sizes. Mostly, I see a daily driver pickup with only one person in it and carrying or pulling nothing. Go Figure! Just make sure every vehicle pays their fair share to maintain the roads and bridges. I.E. - EV's, Inbreds, heavy trucks, etc. etc. etc. Drive vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

There is nothing new here. Both Obama and his Energy Secretary Chu have both said they wanted gasoline prices here at "European levels" ($8-10 per gallon) to "encourage conservation." They would prefer though to get the price higher through taxes. Expect Obama to again propose a carbon tax and other taxes on gasoline before he leaves office.

If fuel prices won't reduce consumption until it was three times the cost, then additional fuel tax won't help unless it is so high it destroys the economey.

Jeez, @MAC48. Paranoid much? How about increasing vehicle mileage to reduce your fuel costs? What's so wrong about that? If you want to screw up the planet, that's fine but why would you want to waste money while doing it?

What do you consider carrots, @DEG? Tax cuts?

Lindalm hit it exactly right. We are going to need both taxes and CAFE standards to maintain the highway system and control consumption.

I fear we are headed for both of these and they will include significant costs. No one will back off the CAFE standards and the increased mileage will force raising the fuel taxes for roads.

likely true, but we need a much fairer based "road usage fee" than the gas tax. Also, mpg needs to be improved and we need to encourage use of alternative transportation

Remember folks that a primary objective of the environmental activist groups is to get/force/persuade the public to reduce their use of vehicles in order to reduce our use of fossil fuels, to reduce the real or perceived contaminants released into the atmosphere by less domestic vehicle miles driven per day and to get/force/persuade the public to greater and greater use of public transportation such as busses, light rail, bicycles, etcetera.
Convincing the public to allow a significant increase in the motor vehicle fuel tax burden at the Federal and state levels will accomplish the goals of the environmental activist groups.
