NTSB Suggests Alcohol Detection Systems On All New Cars

The Car Connection -- Development of in-car technology for all vehicles that determines the blood-alcohol level of the driver. Unlike interlock systems, this new technology would rely on passive information provided by the driver -- say, from the air in the cabin, or perhaps sensors on the steering wheel. It wouldn't interfere with the conventional driving routine, but would instead analyze on-the-go. While there are many potential obstacles to overcome in perfecting this kind of technology -- for example, separating the driver's breath from that of her passengers, or distinguishing between a wine stain on someone's clothes and wine on his breath -- it's likely only a matter of time before those problems are solved.

If they focus only on Alcohol and don't include drugs a lot of impaired drivers will escape under the radar.

Drunk driving is not so pervasive as necessitating a need for such a system. The current interlock systems that exist are adequate and should only be required on cars used by previously guilty DUI offenders.

Not only that, but you can rest assured that if such a thing were mandated, freedom-minded people would find a way to hack it or override it. As important as this article may be, it has no tie-in that we can see with gas prices.
