Every advancement is a step further to energy alternatives. I'm still convinced that eventually EV will need technology that does away with the battery altogether.

leeac enthuses:
"EV technology continues to advance and EVs are here to stay."
Well, the technology will improve over time, but the gains discussed here are just announcements in research papers. These may or may not work out; other technologies may be better.
The better technology includes more efficient ICE's as well as improved hybrid designs. Not to mention natural gas....which is already a mature technology.

Let's hope this research makes it into the real world. Current electric-car battery technology is too primitive and too costly.

I would think lithium ion would get cheeper as more of them are produced. Like the HDTV... They used to be 1900.00 and now a 54" is 495.00 at WalMart. CD Players started out at about $1200.00 now $29.99.

"The energy storage numbers should also be taken with a grain of salt—they’re estimates derived from lab-scale experiments, not measurements of large, commercial-scale batteries."
And cheaper does not mean it's cheap

Oh great. They cannot get a battery to work so now the want to make sure that we have the potential bomb. Actually this is nothing new. Some Pilots of Cargo Aircraft refuse to load lithium components due to their explosive nature. Just think what this could be like in an auto accident when it is raining or snowing and you EV battery cracks open.

EV's are just not the answer at this time, possibly in 20-30 years they might will develope a good & reliable battery but its just not practicle this time.

It's still a new technology and has a way to go but think how far ahead we would be if half the vehicles out there were electric ?? We wouldn't even know (or care) if OPEC existed.

on dec 18 1898 a french race car driver broke the land speed record of just over 60 km/hr in an electric run vehicle. ELECTRIC VEHICLES ARE NOT NEW PEOPLE. eventually it's time will come.

In order for EVs to overtake the fossil-fueled vehicles, the EV battery range, cost, and recharging need to be addressed as being done by research described in the MIT technology review article.
